What is the golden hour?

The golden hour is roughly the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset. The sun sits low, so its light travels through more atmosphere, scattering away the blues and leaving a warm, soft, golden glow. Shadows stretch long and contrast is gentle – which is why photographers and filmmakers plan shoots around it.

And the blue hour?

The blue hour comes just before sunrise and just after sunset, when the sun is below the horizon but the sky still glows a deep, even blue. It is the calm hinge between day and night. Cityscapes look their best here, when artificial lights balance the darkening sky.

Why the times swing so much in Sweden

Sweden sits far north, so day length changes dramatically across the year. Around midsummer the far north barely gets dark at all (the midnight sun), while midwinter days are short and dim. Even in the south, the difference between a June and a December day is striking. That is exactly why a quick daily look at the sun times is so useful here – the "when" of daylight is never the same for long.

Common questions about sun times

What does "golden hour" mean?

The golden hour is roughly the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset, when the sun sits low and the light turns warm and soft. It is not exactly 60 minutes – the lower the sun's path, the longer it lasts, so in Sweden the golden hour is much longer in winter than in summer.

What is the difference between the golden hour and the blue hour?

The golden hour happens while the sun is just above the horizon and the light is warm and golden. The blue hour happens when the sun is just below the horizon and the sky glows a deep, even blue. In order: blue hour, sunrise, golden hour in the morning – and golden hour, sunset, blue hour in the evening.
